MARK 4:35-41

Why does God sometimes lead faithful people into storms? You know the drill. You follow where God leads. You’re obeying his will. But instead of calm waters, you end up battling fierce winds and crashing waves. In our scripture, the disciples were exactly where Jesus told them to be, yet they found themselves in a life-threatening storm. If you’ve ever wondered, “Lord, why would You lead me here?” or “God, don’t You care what I’m going through?”, Mark’s Gospel offers help.

We’ll learn that our greatest danger is not the storm around us, but our amnesia of who is in the boat with us. Jesus calms the sea to answer the question: “Who is this whom the wind and waves obey?” At first the disciples feared the weather; by the end of the night they stood in great fear (read: AWE!) of the One who commands the weather! They learned that safety is never found in separation from storms, but in connection to Christ. It’s still true today.
