Who is the faithful servant? Joseph of Nazareth, that’s who. When Mary tells Joseph she is pregnant, his first reaction isn’t a cheery, “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.” No, he assumes what any of us would conclude was going on, and he sets out to end their betrothal. But then God enters the scene in a dream. He speaks to Joseph about the identity of Jesus and Joseph, like everyone else who follows Christ, hears and heeds the voice of God. Joseph was a faithful agent as earthly father to the newborn King! Like the faithful servants in the parable of the talents, Joseph proved faithful to Jesus’s heavenly Father.
