Mark 16:9-11
In our text, we learn that Jesus had previously exorcised seven demons from Mary Magdalene. This suggests she had endured extreme physical, emotional, and spiritual suffering. To make matters worse, Christians throughout history have been quick to blame Mary for her demon possession: “What did she do to deserve it?” Thankfully, Jesus rejects the practice of blaming victims for their own suffering. Rather, he honors Mary by appearing to her first. This is good news for all of us!
